Try Eco-friendly plant-based household cleaners for a healthier home

Updated: May 15

As a blogger who covers natural skincare and well-being, I'm also passionate about using plant-based cleaning products around the home. Today, let's discuss why I made the switch.

I have asthma and am prone to skin irritation from chemical-laden cleaning products. Therefore, I avoid using products containing chemicals that may trigger an allergic reaction. My lung health is as essential as my overall health, so I avoid using air fresheners, detergents, and soaps containing synthetic fragrances and harmful chemicals.

Cleaning products

Some household cleaners often contain toxic ingredients that may contribute to harmful long-term effects on your health. So, if you want to change the type of products you use to clean your home or business premises, maybe it's time to consider some excellent alternatives.

Here are some of my favourite tried and tested brands.

Le Savon Noir by Fer a Cheval

All Purpose Cleaner & Laundry Detergent: Le Savon Noir by Fer-A-Cheval. This plant-based household cleaner is a wonder. It's 100% natural and can replace many other cleaning products in your cupboard. A 1-litre bottle costs £15.00 and is worth every penny.

Traditional concentrated black soap is an economical, multi-purpose cleaner: a little dose is enough to thoroughly clean, degrease, nourish, and polish all interior or exterior surfaces. It can also be used to wash laundry or to remove stubborn stains on clothes.

This eco-friendly alternative to chemical detergent is formulated with olive oil, without additives, dyes or fragrance.

French black liquid soap

99% of the ingredients are natural. Lavender essential oil naturally perfumes this soap and provides a fresh scent. *It contains traces of limonene, a naturally occurring compound in lavender essential oil.

Easy to decant and add water for an effective spray cleaner.

 To use;

  • For the kitchen, pots, pans, worktops, and floors, Apply 1 tsp to a kitchen sponge or scourer, thoroughly scrub, and rinse with warm water.

  • For floors (tiles, terracotta, wood flooring, plastic coating): Mix 2 tbsp of soap with 5L of hot water, clean the surface, and let it dry.

  • Laundry: For 5 kg of laundry, use 3 tbsp of this liquid soap in your machine's detergent dispenser.

  • Stains: Apply 1 tsp and scrub the stain. Let it rest briefly before placing it in the washing machine or by hand.

Method All-Purpose plant-based Surface Cleaner.

This cleaner is primarily natural and incredibly effective. The Clemintine smells gorgeous but is not overpowering, and an 828ml spray bottle costs around £4.00-£5.00.

Made with plant-based biodegradable ingredients, it works wonders on worktops. Each glorious squirt knocks out grease + food spills, leaving everything fresh and clean.

Ecover Dishwasher Tablets

I've tried a few different brands, but I consider Ecover dishwasher tabs to be the best. They're fragrance-free and use baking soda as one of their main ingredients. They are also plant-based and phosphate-free, which means they are marine life-friendly.

Ecover dishwashing liquid soap

Comparing this with the bottle of green washing-up liquid (you know the one!), it lasts a reasonable time and has a short, sweet ingredient list. It's a great alternative to chemical-laden products.

Ecover Toilet Cleaner

Ecover Pine and Mint plant-based household toilet cleaner is made from pure, safe ingredients. It's practical and won't make you feel sick or dizzy.

I was sceptical when I switched from our usual bleach cleaner, but I was pleasantly surprised by how effectively it tackles limescale. No harsh smells irritate the nose, just naturally inspired fresh fragrances and a sparkling clean loo.

What I love

A toilet cleaner that works yet contains no bleach and is Leaping Bunny-approved!

Method's Almond Squirt and Mop

This floor cleaner has been my go-to for five years, and for good reason. This powerful cleaner removes scuffs, marks, and general dirt from my wooden floors and leaves a pleasant almond fragrance behind. It's like a spa treatment for my floors!
