Where does it come from?
Neroli oil is an essential oil extracted from the flowers of bitter orange trees (Citrus aurantium var. amara). Also known as Orange blossom, steam distillation removes this oil from the flowers.
What are essential oils?
At their core, essential oils are volatile aromatic compounds extracted from plants. They encapsulate the plant's essence, preserving its aroma and therapeutic properties. Each oil has a unique character and benefits, from calming lavender and lemongrass to intoxicating Neroli.
A little bit of history
Neroli might have originated from ancient Persia and was used to perfume royalty and palace walls. From there, it spread to the Mediterranean via the Moors of North Africa. By the end of the 12th century, bitter orange trees were cultivated everywhere in Seville, Spain, to produce this highly desirable essential oil.
Benefits of Neroli
This fragrant and intoxicating oil is highly valued for its use on the skin and its emotional benefits, helping promote happiness and peace and reducing feelings of sadness and depression.
When inhaled, it can raise serotonin levels in the brain, which helps reduce the amount of cortisol (the stress hormone). It's also commonly used in skincare products to help minimise skin breakouts and is the perfect essential oil to add to massage-body oils.
Neroli Essential Oil fragrance is unforgettable, fresh, floral, and perfect for creating natural perfume.
This excellent spicy oil appears in many beauty and lifestyle products, such as natural vegan perfumes, diffusers, body lotions, soaps, bath soaks and candles. It takes about a thousand pounds of freshly picked and undamaged orange blossom flowers to produce a small bottle of pure Mediterranean Neroli oil, which makes it a luxury item.
Neroli oil was initially grown in Tunisia and later in France, but the name "Neroli" is believed to have originated from a town called Nerola in Italy during the 16th century.
According to The Perfume Society, a French princess named Anne Marie Orsini fell in love with the scent of Neroli, which was abundant during springtime. She used it to scent her clothes, baths, and gloves. In Ancient Egypt, priests and priestesses used it like incense. For centuries, orange blossoms were woven into a bride's bouquet to ensure the bridal couple's good luck, happiness, and fertility.
